Why are mums never in the photos!?

Why Mums Are Never in Family Photos (And Why That Needs to Change)

As a mum of two little girls myself, this is something I notice all the time, both in my own life and when I’m photographing families.

Mums are almost never in the photos.

We are usually the ones taking them, organising them, fixing hair, wiping faces, finding snacks, and making sure everyone else looks okay before the camera comes out.

And then later, when you look back through your camera roll or old albums, you realise something quite bittersweet.

There are hundreds of photos of the kids.

Plenty of dad with the kids.

But very few of mum actually in them.

I see this all the time in family photography sessions

When families come into my Melbourne photography studio or meet me for outdoor sessions, I often gently encourage mums to step into the frame more.

A lot of the time I hear things like, “I hate having my photo taken” or “I’ll jump in later once I fix my hair” or “just focus on the kids first.”

And I completely understand it. We are so used to being the behind the scenes person in the family.

But here’s the thing I always gently remind mums.

Your kids are not going to study your hair or your outfit when they look back at these photos one day.

They are going to look for you.

A simple thing I started doing in my own family

One thing I started doing in my own life is making sure my husband and I are both in family photos at least once, sometimes twice a year. I make an active effort to hire a professional photograph purely for this reason.

Because I remember when I was younger, flipping through old photo albums.

And what did I look for first?

My mum and dad.

Not perfect poses.

Not perfect outfits.

Just them.

Together with us.

And yet, in so many families, there are very few photos where everyone is actually in the frame together.

It is not about how you look

I think somewhere along the way, mums get caught up in thinking they need to look a certain way before they are allowed to be photographed.

But family photography is not about that at all.

It is about love.

Connection.

And being able to show your children that you were there, present, and part of their story.

Because one day, these photos become their memories.

Why I gently encourage every mum to step into the frame

When I photograph families as a family photographer in Melbourne, I always make space for those natural moments where mum is included.

Not forced poses.

Not stiff smiles.

Just real connection.

A cuddle.

A laugh.

A quiet moment holding your child’s hand.

These are the images that end up meaning the most over time.

A reminder I often give mums

Your children do not need a perfect version of you in photos.

They just need you in them.

Because these are the moments that become priceless later.

And I promise you, one day you will be so grateful that you existed in the frame instead of always being the one behind it.

If you are thinking about family photos

If you are in Melbourne or the eastern suburbs and you have been putting off family photos because you feel like you are not ready or not camera confident, I want you to know this.

You do not need to be ready.

You just need to show up as you are.

I will guide you through everything so you feel comfortable, natural and completely yourself.

Because your story deserves to be documented with you in it.

And it honestly is the best gift you can give not only your children, but yourself.
