Family Traditions And Why They Matter

Easy Family Traditions That Kids Actually Remember

If you have young or primary school aged kids, you might already feel it. Time starts moving faster. Weeks blur together with school drop offs, sport, homework and busy weekends. Somewhere along the way, the little rituals that once felt automatic can quietly fade.

As a mum of two- one in 3yo kinder and one in grade 1, I know how easy it is to think we need big, planned traditions for them to matter. But the truth is, kids remember the small things. The ordinary moments done consistently. The feeling of being together.

This blog shares easy family traditions that children actually remember, especially during the primary school years, and why showing up for these moments matters more than we realise.

Why Family Traditions Matter More As Kids Get Older

Once kids start school, life speeds up.

The baby years are behind you, but the teenage years feel closer than you would like, and that awareness often sneaks up on parents during these school aged years.

Traditions create a sense of belonging. They give kids something steady to hold onto as everything else changes.

Easy Family Traditions That Truly Stick

These are the traditions that tend to stay with kids long after childhood.

1. One-on-One Time With Each Parent

This does not need to be fancy. A walk. A hot chocolate date. Sitting on the couch talking before bed.

It is often the simplest moments that create the strongest sense of connection.

2. A Weekly Family Routine

Friday night takeaway. Sunday afternoon bike rides. Movie night on the same day each week.

Kids remember predictability. They remember knowing what comes next.

3. Celebrating Ordinary Wins

Not just birthdays and milestones. Finishing a tough week. Trying something new. Showing kindness.

These moments quietly shape how kids feel seen and supported.

4. Seasonal Family Rituals

Autumn walks. Summer beach evenings. Winter baking days. Spring picnics. One personal fav for us and our girls in fish and chips on the beach on balmy summer evenings and bringing our doggos along too.

Seasons help anchor memories and give children something familiar to look forward to each year.

5. A Family Photoshoot Every Few Years

This is one many families put off, especially once kids are at school.

I truly believe having a family photoshoot every couple of years is one of the most meaningful traditions you can create. Not because life has to look perfect, but because these years deserve to be remembered.

As a mum myself, I personally hire a professional photographer every single year. Even though this is my job, I do it because I want to be seen in these seasons. I do not want my kids looking back and only finding photos of everyone else. I want them to see me there with them, showing up, loving them and part of their story. Our story.

Family photos are not about what you look like. They are about presence. About proof. About giving your children a visual history of their family as it truly was.

Why Mums Are So Often Missing From the Memories

This is the part many mums feel deeply.

So many mothers step out of the frame. We are tired. We feel busy. We feel uncomfortable being photographed. We tell ourselves we will do it later.

Many mums feel uncomfortable being photographed, especially as life gets busier and bodies change

But photos are not about what you look like.

They are about proof.

Proof that you were there. Proof that you showed up. Proof of the love your kids felt. They love you no matter how you look.

What Your Kids Will Go Looking For One Day

One day, your children will search for photos of YOU and their whole family unit.

They will look for you holding them. Laughing with them. Standing beside them.

They will not be analysing your hair or your outfit. They will be looking for connection. For reassurance. For the full story of their WHOLE family.

Many parents only realise the importance of these photos once time has already moved on and sadly those years have been missed.

Traditions Are Not Complete Without You In Them

Showing up matters.

Whether it is weekly routines, holidays, small rituals or everyday life, being visible tells your kids that you belonged there too.

This is especially important during the primary school years, when kids are forming long lasting memories of family life.

Why Outdoor Family Photography Sessions Work So Well for Kids

Outdoor family photoshoots are ideal for primary school aged children.

They allow movement. Space. Play. Connection.

Kids do not have to sit still or perform. They can run, laugh and interact naturally. Parents can relax and simply be with their kids.

Families want photos that feel real, relaxed and true to who they are- that's where I come in.

If it has been years since your last family photos, you are not alone. Life gets busy. Time passes quickly, trust me I get it.

My outdoor family photography sessions are designed for families who want something easy and effortless. They are relaxed, fun and focused on authentic connection rather than stiff posing.

Most importantly, they are about showing up. For your kids. For your family. For the memories they will one day look back on.

If you are ready to capture this stage of family life in a natural and meaningful way, I would love to help you document it.
