Your Family Photography Questions Answered

If you’ve been thinking about updating your family photos but keep putting it off because it feels too hard or stressful, you’re not alone.

Between busy schedules, coordinating outfits and trying to convince the kids (and let’s be honest the dads) to cooperate, it can feel like a big job.

But I promise, it doesn’t have to be.

With over 15 years of experience photographing families, I’ve learnt exactly how to make the whole experience relaxed, fun and genuinely enjoyable for everyone involved.

Below are some of the most common questions I get about family photography sessions and a few reassuring answers to help you feel ready and excited for your shoot.

When is the best time to book a family photoshoot?

Most families like to book a few weeks to a couple of months ahead, especially in the warmer months when things book up quickly. If you’re wanting a weekend or school holiday session these generally book out approx 6+ weeks in advance so best to get in contact with me asap!

How long does a family session take?

Most sessions run for about 45 to 60 minutes. I work efficiently (and with a lot of energy!) to keep everyone engaged, especially the kids. You’ll be surprised how quickly we get through it all, the amount of variety I'm able to capture during that time and how much fun everyone ends up having in the process.

What should we wear?

Keep it simple and coordinated without being too matchy-matchy. Neutrals, soft colours, and earthy tones always photograph beautifully. Avoid large logos or bright patterns that can distract from your faces. In saying that I really want you to just wear whatever you feel comfortable in and what represents YOU! I’m more than happy to help plan outfits and many families send me photos beforehand for advice.

What if my kids don’t cooperate or smile?

Honestly, this is a thing some parents worry and honetsly it’s nothing to stress about. I’m a mum myself, so I know that toddlers can have meltdowns and teens can roll their eyes. I make it my mission to win everyone over- even the most camera-shy kids and stubborn husbands. We’ll play games, move around and I’ll guide you the whole way so nothing ever feels forced or stiff.

Can we include grandparents or extended family?

Yes, of course! Multi-generation shoots are some of my favourites. Those images are priceless and often become treasured family heirlooms. If you’re thinking of gifting a session to grandparents, it’s such a beautiful idea.

Do you help with posing?

Always. I never expect anyone to know what to do in front of the camera. I’ll give you clear direction every step of the way. From how to stand, where to look and what to do with your hands. My goal is to make you feel comfortable and confident and to capture natural connections rather than stiff poses.

Where do sessions take place?

You can choose between an outdoor nature reserve located in Mitcham or in my cosy home based photography studio in Vermont. For families wanting something more relaxed and candid, I usually recommend an outdoor shoot. It gives kids space to move, play and just be themselves, which always makes for more genuine smiles and laughter.

Studio sessions are a great choice if you prefer a clean, timeless look or want something that focuses more on connection and simplicity. Both options create beautiful results I know youll love.

How do you handle dads who hate photos?

Ah, the classic question! It’s true...most dads come in expecting it to be painful. But once we start, they realise it’s not what they imagined at all. My sessions are quick, fun, and lighthearted. I chat, joke and keep things moving so it never feels awkward. I’ve even had dads tell me afterwards that it was way easier (and more fun) than they expected.

And for parents with teenagers, don’t worry! I make those sessions interactive and engaging too. We’ll move around, laugh and keep things natural so everyone feels comfortable and has a good time. Best of all my sessions are fast paced so nobody has those fake and cheesy smiles!

How soon do we get to see our photos?

Just like with my newborn photography sessions, you’ll get to see your photos straight after your shoot. I’ll do some quick light adjustments and then you’ll sit down with me in my gorgeous photography studio to view your images on the same day. No waiting weeks -you’ll walk away with your favourites fresh in your mind and USB in your hands!

Do you offer both digital and printed products?

Yes, absolutely. I offer a range of options including digital collections, wall art and beautiful albums. Everything is customisable so you can choose what best suits your family.

How much does it cost and what’s included?

My session fee is $200 and covers your shoot and same-day viewing appointment. There’s no pressure to buy anything upfront. You’ll decide on the day which products or packages you love most. There’s no minimum spend, so it’s completely your choice and risk-free.

What if the weather is bad on the day?

If it’s raining or the weather isn’t ideal, we simply reschedule or move the session to my studio. Melbourne weather can be unpredictable, so I always keep backup options available to make sure you still have a smooth, stress-free experience.

Do you photograph families with pets?

Yes! Pets are part of the family too, and I love including them in sessions. Just let me know beforehand so we can plan accordingly and make sure it all runs smoothly.

What if one of us feels awkward in front of the camera?

You’re definitely not alone. Most people feel that way before their session, but once you’re there, you’ll see how relaxed and fun it really is. I’ll guide you through every step and give you gentle direction so it never feels forced. By the end, you’ll wonder why you waited so long to do it.

Is there any pressure or minimum spend after our session?

No pressure at all. You’ll only purchase the images and products that you truly love. My goal is to make the entire experience easy, enjoyable, and something you’ll look back on fondly- not something that feels salesy or rushed.

Ready to update your family photos?

Whether your little ones are still tiny or you’re trying to round up teenagers for some updated portraits, I promise it will be easier and more enjoyable than you expect. My sessions are full of laughter, connection, and genuine moments- the ones that tell your family’s story.
