Your Headshot & Personal Branding Questions Answered

If you’ve been putting off getting professional photos taken for your business or LinkedIn because it just feels awkward or intimidating, trust me, you’re not alone.

Almost everyone walks into my studio saying the same thing... “I hate having my photo taken.” And almost everyone leaves saying, “That was actually so much fun!”

Below I’ve answered some of the most common questions about headshot and personal branding photography sessions and shared a little about what makes my sessions different.

What is a headshot and personal branding photography session?

A headshot is a professional portrait that focuses on you- usually from the chest or shoulders up, that you can use for things like LinkedIn, websites, or company profiles.

A personal branding session takes things a step further. It’s designed to show more of your personality, style and brand story. We’ll capture a mix of portraits, lifestyle-style shots and detail images that reflect who you are and what you do. These are perfect for small business owners, entrepreneurs, or anyone wanting to elevate their online presence.

The great thing is that my headshot photoshoots include all of these things- so you can make the most of your photo session and get as much variety as possible for your brand.

How long does a session take?

Most sessions take around one hour, depending on how much variety you’d like. I work quickly and efficiently to make sure we get a wide range of looks in that time, and I keep the session flowing so you never feel stiff or unsure of what to do.

I’m not photogenic and feel awkward in front of the camera — can you help?

Absolutely! That’s what I’m here for. I’ll guide you the whole way through with clear direction and fun conversation to help you relax and feel confident. I’ve photographed thousands of people and I know how to bring out genuine expressions and natural smiles. You’ll actually enjoy it, promise.

What should I wear for my session?

My biggest tip is to wear something that feels like you. Sure, neutrals and simple tones usually photograph well, but comfort and confidence are what really matter. If you feel good in what you’re wearing, it will show in your photos. You don’t need to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe- just wear something that represents your style and brand. I also offer zoom calls to go over your wardrobe prior to the shoot if you wish.

Can I change outfits?

Yes, definitely. Most clients bring two to three outfit options so we can create different looks- one more polished and professional and another that’s more relaxed or casual. A quick outfit change helps you get more variety from your session so you have content that suits multiple platforms.

Do you help with posing and expression?

Always. I’ll guide you through exactly how to stand, where to look, and what to do with your hands. I’m all about natural movement and keeping things flowing. You’ll never feel stuck or frozen in one position. I also like to show sneak peeks on the camera during the session, which always boosts confidence and helps you see how great you actually look.

What makes you different to other headshot photographers?

The biggest difference is my experience and to be quite frank-ME. After years of photographing families, kids and even newborns, I’ve learnt how to connect with people quickly and help them relax in front of the camera.

I keep things moving, make it lighthearted, and read the room so I can match your energy. Whether you need a confidence boost, a laugh, or just someone to guide you through it all. I aim to make the process enjoyable, efficient and uplifting.

You’ll leave with a wide variety of photos that go far beyond the standard white background, stiff smile headshot. My sessions are about celebrating you, your confidence, and everything you’ve achieved so you can represent your brand proudly for years to come.

Where do sessions take place?

All headshot and personal branding sessions are held in my Vermont photography studio. It’s a calm, relaxed space with beautiful lighting and a variety of backdrops. If you’re after a more lifestyle look, we can chat about outdoor or on-location options too.

How soon do I get my photos?

You’ll get to see your photos straight after your session. Once I’ve done a few light edits, you’ll view your images on the same day and choose your favourites right then and there. No waiting around or wondering how they turned out.

Do you retouch the images?

I keep my editing natural and realistic. I’ll make light adjustments to colour and exposure, but I don’t do heavy retouching. I want your photos to look like you - just your best, most confident version.

What if I hate having my photo taken?

You’re in the right place. My whole approach is built around making people feel at ease, and I promise you’ll be surprised at how comfortable you’ll feel. My sessions are fast-paced, chatty and fun. I’ll walk you through everything and make sure you actually enjoy the process and the results will speak for themselves.

Can I use the images for social media and websites?

Yes, of course. Your photos are yours to use across all your professional platforms- LinkedIn, your website, business cards, social media and marketing materials. I also aim to capture enough variety that you’ll have content to use for years to come.

How much does it cost and what’s included?

My session fee is $200 and covers your time in the studio and same-day viewing appointment. You then decide which images or packages you’d like to purchase. There’s no pressure or minimum spend, you simply choose what you love.

Is there any pressure or minimum spend after the session?

Not at all. You only buy what you truly love. I want the experience to feel easy, enjoyable, and empowering, so never pressured or rushed. If I'm being honest, most clients end up walking away with more than they expected, simply because they’re blown away by how good they look and how much they enjoyed the experience.
